CAPTAIN'S CORNER

Ending the year in style

Believe it or not we are nearly at the end of another golfing season and I hope everyone has enjoyed their golf with the club this year. Hopefully you can all take away some memories that will form the basis of a decent reminisce with good golfing friends at some point in the future. (Captain note - for reminisce read tall stories!!)

It also means that the Club Championships are not far away and if you have not yet entered you need to drop Steve Booth a line very quickly as numbers are growing and available hotel rooms are declining.

MONTHLY MEDAL ROYAL LAKESIDE

HANDICAPS

Saturday 8th November

The car was full with Lefty, Noi and Howard as we left Pattaya and headed for Royal Lakeside for the last match this season. Interestingly many of you will already know that the roles of each course will change next year with Bangpakong hosting the medal round and Royal Lakeside the stableford – a change they say is as good as a rest and I for one think it will add a bit of fun.

MONTHLY STABLEFORD BANGPAKONG RIVERSIDE

September

It was just going to be one of those days, the days when the sun was going to shine a brighter shade of yellow; the wind would turn a wisp into a gentle zephyr, the grass would even seem to be a greener shade of green, and the groups would have fun.

Heads on with the Bull's Head, the yearly clash of the Titans. This year it all happened at Royal Lakeside. Read all about it.

The Good Shepherd Sisters mission is directed towards those who are most deprived and rejected in society, especially women and girls.  Those Golfers who have attended the annual Turkey Trot (Dec 14th this year) will be familiar with Sister Louise and the fantastic Children.
The Sisters minister to those in need irrespective of race and religion.  In Thailand the sisters established their first house in Bangkok in 1965
From a very modest beginning, the services in Bangkok have now extended to meet needs in many areas, these include:

The Fatima Self Help Centre
This provides opportunities for 115-120 girls and women from nearby slums and government housing to learn basic skills that will enable them to earn a decent living.  Dressmaking and needlework of all kinds are taught and the standard of work is high.

A Day Care Centre
Taking care of approximately 87 children of the women who work at the Fatima centre and other small children  from poor families in the neighbourhood who are at risk providing education and nutritional needs.

Baan Sukruthai
A Mother and Baby Home which caters for approx 25-30 young women who are unable to handle their pregnancies alone, often because of rejection by family or by the father of her child.

Teenage Residential Training Centre
This provides a residential school for 45-50 young girls aged between 10 and 18 who have problems or at risk in their community.  The Girls come from very poor families with many of them from broken homes and have a history of sexual abuse and or rape.  Here they can complete their education whilst receiving help and counselling in an atmosphere of understanding.  Practical skills are also taught, including dressmaking, hairdressing, flower making, handicrafts typing and computer studies.

Some of the girls in residential care have serious medical conditions including HIV, STD’s and depression, without the Sisters care they would be out on the street.  Amongst the residential girls are very young single mothers and some extreme abuse cases.
How can you help? Donations of Clothes, Fabric, Books and of course Money can be made at the Fatima Self Help Centre on Soi 33, or directly through the centre based at 4128/1 Asoke Din Daeng Road in Din Daeng, please call first though on 02-245 0547
