The Good Shepherd Sisters mission is directed towards those who are most deprived and rejected in society, especially women and girls. Those Golfers who have attended the annual Turkey Trot (Dec 14th this year) will be familiar with Sister Louise and the fantastic Children.
The Sisters minister to those in need irrespective of race and religion. In Thailand the sisters established their first house in Bangkok in 1965
From a very modest beginning, the services in Bangkok have now extended to meet needs in many areas, these include:
The Fatima Self Help Centre
This provides opportunities for 115-120 girls and women from nearby slums and government housing to learn basic skills that will enable them to earn a decent living. Dressmaking and needlework of all kinds are taught and the standard of work is high.
A Day Care Centre
Taking care of approximately 87 children of the women who work at the Fatima centre and other small children from poor families in the neighbourhood who are at risk providing education and nutritional needs.
Baan Sukruthai
A Mother and Baby Home which caters for approx 25-30 young women who are unable to handle their pregnancies alone, often because of rejection by family or by the father of her child.
Teenage Residential Training Centre
This provides a residential school for 45-50 young girls aged between 10 and 18 who have problems or at risk in their community. The Girls come from very poor families with many of them from broken homes and have a history of sexual abuse and or rape. Here they can complete their education whilst receiving help and counselling in an atmosphere of understanding. Practical skills are also taught, including dressmaking, hairdressing, flower making, handicrafts typing and computer studies.
Some of the girls in residential care have serious medical conditions including HIV, STD’s and depression, without the Sisters care they would be out on the street. Amongst the residential girls are very young single mothers and some extreme abuse cases.
