Committee Announcement |
Statement from Londoner's Golf Club Committee on Non-conforming drivers“The Committee discussed this subject at some length and we considered all of the following, equally when making our decision for our members:
The reality of members buying golf clubs is that in general, they do so based upon personal criteria and subjective opinions on how the club looks and what others are using. We understand that some members will buy clubs such as drivers for fun, whereas others consider the purchase of the same as a significant item on their golfing budget. We play by and encourage increased knowledge amongst our members in the Rules of Golf and as a Golfing Society, we will continue in this way. Inspecting members' golfing equipment for non-conforming clubs is not something that this committee will undertake. Such actions can ruin the atmosphere in a friendly group, such as ours, so we do not consider this appropriate. Adhering to the Rules of Golf is all about personal honour, not policing, so we expect our members to have conforming clubs. In deference to those members, who may not find it so easy to go out and buy a new driver immediately, we will give a period of grace until the end of 2008. Those of us, who elect to use non-conforming drivers between now and the end of this year, will know that they are technically violating the rules and we need to be able to, "live with that". Meanwhile, if you have yet to do so, please review your drivers on the R&A Web site, which can be accessed from here: www.randa.org By 1st January, 2009, we would hope all members will have up to 14 conforming golf clubs in their bag and a clear conscience. The Committee will not police this policy and are therefore not interested in, "information" about members' golf clubs. This decision will not be accepted by all, but we believe that in the interests of preserving the good atmosphere in the Londoner’s Golf Club, this is the best possible compromise that the Committee could come up with in the end and we agreed unanimously”.
