Bangkok Golf League 2008

Match One

The sparrows turned up for the first match of the season fresh from the xmas and new year festivities as the “guinea pigs” for the first game of the new season.

The reason for the guinea pig tag was that we were the first team to play against “the course”. As there were only nine teams in the league this year, another team was introduced – Legacy, the course.

The idea is that each team would play Legacy at some stage in the season in 4 pairs of better ball match play.

BBB and myself , Noi Jeffers and David Ambridge, Nikki Cox and Marc le Cart Leuthold, Charles Cain (making his Londoner debut) and Simon Habron set off on 3/4 handicaps to play match play against opponents who always play to their handicap i.e  scratch !!

BBB and myself managed to Yin and Yang to record a comfortable win, Nikki and Marc lost a close match on the short course. Charles and Simon struggled on the long course, however the heroin of the day went to Noi as, unfortunately David had to leave after 9 holes and Noi managed to hold on to record a halved match.

So in the end we lost to Legacy 2 ½ - 1 ½ but we will not know whether this is a good result or a bad one until later in the season as the other teams play their matches.

Will Legacy win the league ? Did we have a bad result ? The after match thought was that it would be very tough to beat the course and the league may pick up the prize at the end of the season.

Match two

Londoners V Gee Gees

Two of last season’s strugglers were paired together so a win was vital. After the distractions of the Sanook Cup it was great to welcome back a couple of regulars in Scott and Lefty Jeffers. Also making his debut was a mate of mine Paul Davies who plays off a very healthy 16 at Thai country club so I decided to select, off on the long course, the ever reliable Nikki and Paul. Nikki has still not lost under my Captaincy in singles and is always “the first name on the team sheet” and she did not let me down. Paul also started well on his debut and recorded a comfortable win.
In the long course doubles I paired the Jeffers household together and an easy win ensued giving us a clean sweep on the long course.
Marc le Cart and Simon were in the doubles on the short course and found the going tough losing out to their opponents so the Gee Gee’s were starting to canter !
It was left to Scott and myself to bring back three points for the sparrows and I managed a fine win against a lady off 12 who always seemed to get “up and down” from 60 yards with great ease !
The final game was a joy to witness. Scott was always behind in the match but managed to keep within touching distance and at dormy three a quiet word from the captain was needed. Scott, your three down with three to play, here have a heineken !! The 16th is a lengthy par 3 and the sparrow nudges a 7 wood to 3 feet not only winning the hole but also receiving the near pin to boot…dormy two. 17th Difficult par 4, water on the right. Bang down the middle, bang to the front of the green, nudge to 2 ft Par ! ….Dormy one. 18th very difficult par 4 stroke index 2. Scott drives down the middle, his opponent likewise. Second shot his opponent was just short of the green, Scott blasted his into the greenside bunker with an awful lie but 2 net 1. 3rd shot Gee Gees were 3ft from the pin almost a gimme. Then the shot of the day, a splash from the bunker but it goes 12 ft past the hole….then putt of the day..kerplonk straight into the hole 4 net 3…match halved.
The team result 4 ½ - 1 ½ and we were climbing the table to fourth. Onto the next match V our great friends Wanderer’s

Match Three

Londoners V Wanderer’s

The annual game against our great friends and often golfing partners was in store on a fantastic day for golf as the temperature was just perfect for a gentle strole and it was great to welcome back our fine fellow sparrow David “Thirsty” Hursty.

Our opponents’ Captain Karen Holloway and I “locked horns” early Saturday morning with neither giving away their team strategy until the team sheets were swapped just before tee off.

On the Long course Noi and Simon were up against Karen and Mr Chairman Gareth “Gladys” Knight.
Long course singles paired the formidable Nikki against Mr Ex Chairman Andy Flynn and Eric Mallace against Robin Briars

Short course paired the two David’s Jeffers & Hurst against John Carr and Frank Bremmer.
Short course singles were myself against Dave O’Callaghan and Scott against Rich Skubel.

David and I shared the spoils with a halved match in, what I have to say, was one of the most enjoyable matches I have played in this league…and an appropriate result.
Scott came up against an in form Rich who managed a level par 36 on the back 9…more than a match for against anyone…even the “green medicine” at the 16th drinks stop could not help this time as the game finished after this defining hole.
The short course doubles saw the two David’s triumph with a fantastic 2 & 1 win over their opponents..a fine result which saw us up 1 ½ – 1 ½  from the short course matches.
When we arrived back to the clubhouse it was a surprise to see all the players from the long course already washed, showered and tucking into the Tom Yam but it was nice to see a big smile from Noi and Simon who had the result of the day .. a 3 & 2 win against Karen and Gareth. Eric ever steady Mallace won a very tight game on the 18th, however the previously unbeaten Nikki lost against Andy.

All in all though a terrific win 3 ½ - 2 ½ which was a fine turn around from last season’s 0 – 6 drubbing !!

With all the results in we had jumped up to 2nd place in the table. With a break for Songkran in April we can now take stock and look back at our fine start to the new season. Well done guys and galls !!
